‘Folklore imaginaire’ takes a closer look at a body of work that we have been exploring together for many years now: the solos, duos, trios, and sextets of Ana Sokolović. The fresh and inventive spirit, the energetic rhythms of her music, and the melodic lyricism that flows from her original Serbian culture have inspired us. Her irrepressible and contagious love of life, her poetry and humour, all these things are a source of deep gratification for us.
Ana Sokolović is recognized as one of Canada’s foremost composers, and has earned many prizes for her popular, wide-ranging, and highly successful works. The present recording focuses on the poetry and humor of her instrumental music. Three works bear the traces of Sokolović’s Balkan roots, while vastly transcending purely traditional folklore. The dazzling Trois Études are masterpieces of compositional economy, and the equally impressive Ciaccona, the locus for a world of transformations.
